Cooperating with "Change" Through "Changelessness"
by Fredericka Fairchild

Galaxy Scientists report our universe is in a continuous state of change, expanding limitlessly. While this is an interesting idea, most people aren't contemplating it as a fact of life. After all, is anyone actually experiencing the expansion of the universe? We are more aware of change when it effects us directly. Some events are expected such as the cyclic nature of the seasons or the sun rising and setting. Other kinds of change, the human lifespan itself, we may accept as true, but often live as though it will never occur.

Change appears to be the most obvious, and even threatening to peace of mind during the course of every day living. Sooner or later we recognize, "What goes up, will come down." When it's "down," survival instinct motivates us to work hard to achieve "up." And when it's "up," fear instinct can inspire desperate measures to keep it that way. The "what if?...what if?...what if?" melody can sour the best of accomplishments. Another basic instinct is to cope with anticipatory loss through attempts at controlling change.

LH contacted me recently asking for help. She had been suffering from insomnia for the past year with perhaps two hours of sleep each night at best. Our families have known each other as summer camping buddies for about ten years. LH is in her mid-50's, married with a fourteen year old son. She's one of the few women I know who enjoys a long-term and mutually loving marriage. It seems a year ago, LH (a real estate broker by profession), moved from a small office to a corporate firm with listings now in the multi-million dollar range. Whether or not she could land her first big closing was weighing on her day and night, despite the fact her potential income was superfluous to the family's economic security. They didn't "need" the money!

Visualization Audio Tape I decided to treat LH's symptoms first. If she responded, then I would address her mindset directly. The protocol consisted of a series of Daily Elixirs and a recording of Guided Visualizations for self-hypnosis and stress management: Grief and Stress Relief elixirs in the morning to calm the nervous system, mind and subconscious fears. Motivation elixir in the afternoon to experience the joy of work for the sake of it and the Sleep Restore along with Stress Relief elixir at bedtime. I recommended she commit to listening to the guided visualization recording once a day (a 30-minute practice). A week later she called and with astonishment in her voice, told me she slept the night before for 14 full hours and couldn't even keep her eyes open, even though it was only mid-morning. She had in fact taken the elixirs as suggested and listened every day to the recording. She would leave the office on her lunch break and play it in her car with the seat reclined.

Naturally I was happy and relieved to hear this and decided to give her the enlightenment talk. I explained quite bluntly her fears were delusional created out of imaginary poverty consciousness. She was shocked and heard this as truth. I went on to say, "You are a beautiful woman on the inside and out. You have your health, a husband who absolutely adores you, a loving son, a fabulous house and plenty of money. And guess what, you aren't enjoying a single moment of your life. You are ruining each and every day with this delusional fear. Keep it up and you might actually manifest it!"

LH realized she had been taking on the consciousness of her sales office. She explained the high stakes and potential commissions drove everyone in the office into a daily frenzy. She had begun to imagine many horrific ways her family could lose its security, and was in a whirlwind to make a lot of money...just in case. What if the stock market plummeted and their retirement savings were lost?

jumping joy LH suddenly understood it was time to reconnect with her essential being. What brought LH to this kind of work in the first place was re-awakened. She is a people person and actually enjoys getting to know her clients and finding them a home they will be happy in. I strongly supported this motive and asked her to affirm it each day before entering the office. I also explained anticipating loss is a delusion that creates the pressure to control and hold onto everything tightly. A mindset causing a severe sleep disturbance and daily anxiety for her.

Sometimes, the more you have, the more you want. This is because what you have, may not always last. It is the truth of impermanence. In fact, the only thing that remains the same, is change itself. Change is Changeless. When you connect with this--really get it, a miraculous shift in consciousness takes place. You begin to live the present moment. You give up dwelling in the past and stop obsessing the future or trying to control it. You simply live right now and fully. A difficult moment(s) dissolves and resolves more easily. Unexpected solutions, help from others, or even new methods have a way of arising. In easier moments the majesty of life can fill you. So.. whether you are "up," "down," or somewhere "in-between"...

Try This Exercise To Cooperate With Change:

Desert moon

  • Experience the River of Changelessness Each Day
  • Close your eyes and visualize a vast cobalt blue, desert sky
  • Breathe in the sky - now breathe out the cobalt blue sky. Repeat Again.
  • Affirm: past, future and present melt into your breath. Breathe it in and out.
  • Affirm: Here - Now - I Am - I Am Blue sky

Perhaps, that expanding universe we read about, will begin to seem real and even magical.
